The Divine Commentary on The Book of Daniel - Ch 03 (16.3.11)

Dan 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.

Divine commentary –

“Herewith the king brought idolatry to his kingdom,

embedded it within the hearts of the citizens of his kingdom,

commenced a walk away from the blessings of his kingdom.”

Dan 3:2 And King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to gather together the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counsellors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Dan 3:3 So the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counsellors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered together for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Dan 3:4 Then a herald cried aloud: "To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages,

Divine commentary –

“So the herald,

                    at the king’s decree,

issues his all encompassing proclamation to the peoples of the earth.”

Dan 3:5 "that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up;

Divine commentary –

“So the proclamation continues as it sets the stage with signals,

as it sets the stage for worship,

as it sets the stage with a golden idol.”

Dan 3:6 "and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace."

Divine commentary –

“as it sets the stage with intimidation unto obedience,

as it sets the stage with the consequence for failure to comply.”

Dan 3:7 So at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, harp, and lyre, in symphony with all kinds of music, all the people, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the gold image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Divine commentary –

“So at that time,

as the people heard the signal –

the king’s call to worship –

everywhere they prostrated themselves in an act of worship of the gold image,

                                                                                        which King Nebuchadnezzar had installed.”

Dan 3:8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and accused the Jews.

Divine commentary –

“And so it was that at that time some Chaldeans,

aware of the need for self-promotion,

aware of the king’s love of his decree,

                                                                 aware of his likely reaction,

aware of their failure with his dream,

aware of an opportunity to seek his favour:

presented before the king in order to accuse the Jews.”

Dan 3:9 They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, "O king, live forever!

Dan 3:10 "You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the gold image;

Divine commentary –

“So they made their supplication,

so they laid the basis for their audience before the king.”

Dan 3:11 "and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.

Divine commentary –

“So their reiteration was complete,

so the penalty was refreshed within the memory of the king.”

Dan 3:12 "There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up."

Divine commentary –

“So a select few of the Chaldeans laid their charges before the king,

not daring to list Daniel with the three.”

Dan 3:13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, in rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So they brought these men before the king.

Divine commentary –

“So Nebuchadnezzar filled with rage and in his fury –

at this reported insult to his decree unto the peoples –

                                                 had Shadrach,

                                                              Meshach,

and Abed-Nego taken and brought before the king.”

Dan 3:14 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, "Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up?

Divine commentary –

“ So the king enquired of Shadrach,

                                         Meshach,

                                   and Abed-Nego the truthfulness of the accusations of the Chaldeans;

                      invited from Shadrach,

                                           Meshach,

                                    and Abed-Nego a rebuttal.

               So their silence,

                         before the king,

brought a test of their intent.”

Dan 3:15 "Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, good! But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?"

Divine commentary –

“So the king sought their acquiescence,

                                                     to the deed of worship,

                 from Shadrach,

                         Meshach,

                   and Abed-Nego –

                                      the act of confirmation –

in proof of the falseness of the accusation as laid before the king.

So he spelt out the penalty,

as he so mocked their God.”

Dan 3:16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

Divine commentary –

“Then Shadrach,

           Meshach,

and Abed-Nego pre-empted the signal for the test,

as they declined to answer Nebuchadnezzar’s questioning of their actions,

as they declined to answer Nebuchadnezzar’s mocking of their God.”

Dan 3:17 "If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king.

Divine commentary –

“So these three Jews in service to the king and to their God expressed their faith in their God of heaven as they stood before the king.”

Dan 3:18 "But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up."

Divine commentary –

“So these men upheld the truth before the king,

                                                                      even unto death.

So these men were able to separate the service of man from the service of God.

So these men were approved of God.

So they so honoured God through their testimony of Him.

So God would so honour as He testified of them.”

Dan 3:19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated.

Divine commentary –

“So the authority of the king was challenged in the hearing of the audience,

so the king’s expression hardened in decision,

so the king was committed to the enforcement of his decree,

so the heating of the furnace became a measure of his fury.”

Dan 3:20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valour who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

Divine commentary –

“So the sturdiest and the bravest in his army were commanded to bind Shadrach,

                                                                                                                 Meshach,

                                                                                                          and Abed-Nego as they stood,

then to cast them into the burning fiery furnace when heated as instructed.”

Dan 3:21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

Dan 3:22 Therefore, because the king's command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego.

Divine commentary –

“So the king’s call for the absence of delay,

when combined with the seven-fold heating of the furnace,

resulted in the flame of the fire having the ability to kill those tasked to put Shadrach,

                                                                                                                                   Meshach,

and Abed-Nego there within the furnace.”

Dan 3:23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

Divine commentary –

“So as the record states these three men,

                                           Shadrach,

                                           Meshach,

                                    and Abed-Nego,

                                                    fell down bound,

                                                                       as expected,

into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.”

Dan 3:24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counsellors, "Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?" They answered and said to the king, "True, O king."

Divine commentary –

“In the presence of both the king and his counsellors did these events occur,

                                                                                      did the furnace flame,

did the sturdiest and the bravest die within the scouring flame,

did the bound fall down enflamed.

So the king expressed astonishment,

                                                rose to inspect more closely,

                   asked his counsellors for confirmation of the events before his eyes;

events confirmed by the other eyes.”

Dan 3:25 "Look!" he answered, "I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."

Divine commentary –

“Then the king exclaimed at his seeing four men loose,

walking in the midst of the fire without impediment,

                                                                 without hurt;

                         and then further exclaimed,

by the disclosed mystery of God,

that the form of the fourth was like the Son of God.”

Dan 3:26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here." Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire.

Divine commentary –

“Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the mouth of the furnace,

                    and called Shadrach,

                                      Meshach,

                                and Abed-Nego,

as the servants of the Most High God,

                                to come out,

                                to stand before him.”

Dan 3:27 And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king's counsellors gathered together, and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.

Divine commentary –

“So all the witnesses gathered together as they gazed,

                                                                         in absolute amazement,

             upon these men;

                      these men on whose bodies the fire had no power;

                                       on whose hair and clothing the fire neither singed nor scorched;

on whose very presence the fire left no smell.”

Dan 3:28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!

Divine commentary –

“Then Nebuchadnezzar recalled for the record exactly what had happened,

                                                                           exactly what had been seen,

exactly what had arisen as a result of the king’s decree.

King Nebuchadnezzar blessed the God of Shadrach,

                                                                               Meshach,

                                                                        and Abed-Nego publicly,

before the gathering of all who had come to witness an expected funeral pyre.”

Dan 3:29 "Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this."

Divine commentary –

“So the testimony of men called down the testimony of God;

so the testimony of God brought a sign of The Spirit,

so the sign of The Spirit brought an imprint to the heart of a king,

so the heart of a king spoke as a new royal witness,

so the new royal witness made a new decree,

so the new decree spoke in homage,

in fear of The God of Shadrach,

                                                                                             Meshach,

                                                                                       and Abed-Nego:

of all which had passed before the eyes of the king.”

Dan 3:30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.
