The Variety of Choice (19.12.08)

“The variety of the choice of man is to be exercised with wisdom.

The variety of the choice of man is tempting to his taste,

                                                     is tempting to his sight,

                                                     is tempting to his hands.

The variety of the choice of man lightens the pocket of man,

                                                     lightens the chores of man,

lightens the workload of the hands.

The variety of the choice of man is produced by experimentation,

is produced by lines of tools,

is produced at the request of man,

                                                                          through the quest of man,

                                                                          at the behest of man.

The variety of the choice of man is marketed to empty out the pocket,

                                                                         to appeal to slothfulness,

to emphasize the fears of man.

The variety of the choice of man is enhanced by the folding coinage of the realm of man.

The variety of the choice of man is enhanced by transport.

The variety of the choice of man is enhanced by distance –

the freight ways of the far-off lands.

The variety of the choice of man is dependent on imagination,

                                                                          on a source of energy,

on the hands of man that cuddle bags of wealth.

The variety of the choice of man brings payment to the poor that keeps them poor –

brings payment to those who cannot read,

                                                                                   those who cannot write –

which is insufficient to buy chalk.

The variety of the choice of man transfers labour to those who must,

                                                                                                     just to survive.

The variety of the choice of man is priced without concern for the need of chalk,

                                                                                                     the need of a teacher,

                                                                                                     the need of human dignity,

                                                                                                     the need for hope.

The variety of the choice of man does not dwell on those who must grovel for their bread,

                                                                                                    cry out for assistance,

have eyes that size the saucers* of the soul.

Those who feed on the variety of the choice of man would do well to reconsider their lack of wisdom

                                                                                                                 that maintains,

                                                                                                                 that encourages the grovelling,

                                                                                                                                           the deafened ears,

the enlarging of the saucers of the soul.

Those who feed on the variety of the choice of man,

                   who surround themselves in plenty,

                   who know no lack,

                   who see no lack,

                   who feel no lack,

                   who experience an abundance:

those are they who have a responsibility before God to exercise their wisdom of selection

that justice may encroach upon the poor –

that they may not gobble at a table and see no crumbs fall to the floor –

that they may insist on justice and see the winds of change blow through an opened door.”
